Tunetable – A Shared Music Discovery Appliance

This is old. I built this back in 2007 originally. Its an interactive music discovery appliance built to operate on a shared interactive surface, such as a table. I may still rebuild it as a mobile app now that tablets are large and ubiquitous enough that it could support something like this. Here is a demo and a brief explanation of what you are seeing follows.

Its designed to operate with no ‘up’, as you would have on a traditional screen based application as users will sit around it. You’ll see that as items of interest are selected and passed around the table they become bigger and rotate to face the edge they are closest to. You’ll also notice that items move around the screen at different speeds, this is controlled by their estimated average BPM. As you select an item of interest other ‘similar’ items swarm around it to provide a sort of browsing and exploration experience.

The ‘Now Playing’ widget is replicated in each corner of the table. Items are dropped there to play them. I may opensource the whole thing once I’ve re-written it, probably for Android first.
